The classic Utah version of this call comes in April. You turn on the outside spigot for the first time since fall, it works fine for about ten seconds, and then somebody yells from the basement that water is coming through the ceiling. The pipe split back in January. It just could not show you until you opened the valve. From June 2025 through July 2026 our techs ran 31 hose bibb and outdoor faucet jobs across Northern Utah.

Hose bibb work we actually did this past year
This is our own job log, June 2025 through July 2026, not an industry average: 13 hose bibb calls, 8 hose bibb estimates, 7 hose bibb diagnostics, and 3 hose bibb installs. That is 31 outdoor faucet jobs in twelve months. It is seasonal work. The calls stack up in spring when people first open the valve, and again in fall when somebody realizes they never winterized.
Why they break here
Water expands when it freezes, and it does not care what is in its way. If any water is left sitting in the section of pipe that runs through your exterior wall, a hard Wasatch Front night will split it. Two things make it worse in Utah homes. First, a hose left attached over winter. The hose traps water in the bibb so it cannot drain back, which is the single most common reason a frost-free faucet freezes anyway. A frost-free sillcock only works if the valve seat sits inside the heated wall and the pipe can drain. A garden hose defeats both. Second, our freeze and thaw cycle. It is not one deep freeze. It is dozens of nights below freezing followed by days above it, all winter, and every cycle works on a crack that is already there. Add water measured between 8 and 29 grains of hardness across our service area, which scales up valve seats and washers, and an outdoor faucet in this state lives a hard life.
What we do
Replace split and leaking hose bibbs, including swapping a standard spigot for a frost-free sillcock so the shutoff point sits inside the warm wall. Rebuild or replace bibbs that drip at the handle or the packing nut. Add or replace the dedicated indoor shutoff so you can isolate the outdoor line without shutting down the house. Install a vacuum breaker where one is missing or has failed. Add a new outdoor faucet where you need one, on a garage, a shop, or the far side of the yard. And repair the interior supply line and the freeze damage behind the wall when the split is not at the fixture itself. If you find yourself standing in front of a spraying spigot right now, shut it off at the indoor valve or at your stop and waste before you call. The honest part about wall access
Most hose bibb replacements happen from the outside and you would never know we were there. Some do not. When the split is back inside the wall, or the bibb is soldered onto copper with no accessible union, we have to open a small access from the inside to reach it. We will tell you before we cut anything, not after, and we open the smallest hole that will do the job. We are plumbers. We do not patch, texture, or paint drywall. If access is needed, you will hear it in the quote so you can plan for the touch-up rather than be surprised by it.
Winterizing, so we do not see you in April
Before the first hard freeze: disconnect every hose. Close the indoor shutoff for the outdoor line if you have one, then open the outdoor faucet and leave it open so the line drains and has room to expand. If your bibb has a bleeder cap, drain it. Get your sprinkler system blown out on schedule, since the outdoor faucet is often the least of what freezes. An insulated faucet cover is a few dollars and does no harm, but it is not a substitute for draining the line.
