Indirect water heater

Hot water from the boiler you already run

An insulated tank that uses boiler heat instead of a second burner.

If a boiler already heats the house, a separate tank water heater is a second appliance burning fuel in the same mechanical room. An indirect tank lets the boiler heat domestic water through a coil or a tank-in-tank design. We size it to the household so showers do not run out, and we quote on a 3-hour appointment window.

Schedule Service

One heat source, two jobs, sized on purpose

An indirect water heater has no burner of its own. It stores heat from the boiler. That is efficient when the boiler is the right size, and a disappointment when the boiler is already maxed out on a January morning.

How an indirect tank makes hot water

The boiler heats a well-insulated tank through a coil or a tank-in-tank heat exchanger. There is no separate flue or burner on the water heater. Fewer parts to fail, and the tank often outlasts a standalone gas unit because it is not sitting over its own flame.

When this is the right setup

When this is the right setup

Homes that already have a hydronic boiler, especially with radiant or baseboard, are the usual fit. You drop a second combustion appliance and keep one service plan. If you do not have a boiler, this is not a shortcut around a regular water heater.

Recovery, priority, and January mornings

Recovery, priority, and January mornings

If everyone showers while the house is calling for heat, the boiler has to share. We talk about priority controls and tank size so the house does not go cold to finish a shower, and the shower does not go cold to heat the slab.

Utah hard water still applies

Utah hard water still applies

An indirect tank still fills with the same 8 to 29 grain water as every other heater on the Wasatch Front. Scale still lives in the tank. A real salt-based softener is what protects it. Conditioning is not the same job.

How it compares to tank and tankless

A standalone tank has its own burner. Tankless heats on demand and hates scale. An indirect stores a lot of hot water and uses the boiler you already maintain. The honest pick depends on whether a boiler is already in the plan.

What we will not claim
Water heater maintenance by Rare Breed Plumbing in Utah

What we will not claim

We will not promise unlimited hot water from a small boiler, and we will not skip the mixing and tempering that keeps stored water safe at the tap. The tank is a storage vessel. The boiler is the engine. Both have to be sized.

Size the tank to the house, not the closet

A tank that is too small runs out. A tank that is huge on a tiny boiler never recovers when the house and the showers call at once. We walk the morning routine before we pick a gallon size.

Is an indirect the same as a combi boiler?

No. A combi makes domestic hot water on demand inside the boiler. An indirect stores it in a tank. Combis hate long simultaneous showers. Tanks ride through them if they are sized.

Can I keep my old tank water heater too?

You can, and you usually should not. Two tanks in one room is two anode rods, two relief valves, and two places to leak. We will say if a backup tank is actually doing a job.

Does this work with radiant floors?

Yes. That is a common pairing. The boiler heats the floor and the tank. Controls decide who gets priority when both call at once.

Does an indirect tank need maintenance?

Yes, though less than a standalone heater. There is no burner on the tank, so the yearly check is the relief valve, the anode where the tank has one, and a flush when Utah hard water has been at it. The boiler gets its own tune-up.

Gibb Van Orman was so nice and so honest. My furnace wasn’t heating the air it was blowing. Gibb found the problem instantly and it was a quick fix. Other servicers could have said I needed a new motor but Gibb was honest about it. He also fixed a small problem that a previous servicer from a different company handled incorrectly. Overall, this was another great service visit from Rare Breed.
