3 Reasons Why Tankless Water Heaters Are Suitable for Cold Climates
Tankless water heaters have gained significant popularity in recent years. However, there’s one question that many people ask themselves when considering a tankless system: Do they work in cold climates?
The short answer is yes, tankless water heaters can work in cold climates. They perform better in these regions than traditional storage tank models. Here’s why.
1. Efficient Heating Technology
Tankless water heaters use advanced heating technology to deliver hot water almost instantly. Instead of continuously heating and storing hot water in a tank, tankless systems heat water as it flows through the unit. Consequently, they use less energy and produce less waste heat. This translates to significantly reduced energy bills and a more sustainable home heating solution in cold climates.

2. Freeze Protection
Most units build in freeze protection, and here is the part the brochure leaves out: that freeze protection is electric. Small heaters inside the unit keep the heat exchanger above freezing, and they need power to do it. So the real cold-climate risk in Utah is not a cold night, it is a cold night with the power out. If you lose power during a hard freeze and the unit is on an exterior wall or in an unheated garage, it needs to be drained.
The other cold-weather detail is the vent. A tankless unit vents through a sidewall, and that exhaust carries moisture. Terminate it too low, or where snow drifts and roof melt run, and the termination ices over. When it ices, the unit shuts itself down on a vent fault, which people read as the heater failing when it is really the install. Height above grade and clearance from the snow line are not optional here the way they are in Phoenix.
3. Proper Sizing and Installation
This is the one that actually decides whether you like your tankless heater, and it is the number almost nobody explains at the point of sale. A tankless unit is not rated in gallons. It is rated in temperature rise, how many degrees it can lift the incoming water at a given flow rate. In a Utah winter the water coming into your house is genuinely cold, so the unit has to work much harder to reach the same tap temperature than it does in July.
That is why a unit advertised at a headline flow rate can feel undersized in January. The headline number is measured against a small temperature rise. Ask for the flow rate at your winter inlet temperature, not the number on the box, and size the unit off the coldest month rather than the warmest. Get that right and you never think about it again. Get it wrong and you will notice every February when two showers run at once.
Installation is the other half. Most tankless units need more gas than the tank they replace, so the gas line often has to be upsized, and the flue usually gets redone. That is the honest reason the upfront cost is higher than a tank swap. What you get back is a longer service life, roughly 15 years of warranty against about 6 on a typical tank, and no 50-gallon tank sitting in the basement waiting to let go.
Tankless water heaters can deliver hot water reliably and efficiently in cold climates, provided they are sized properly, installed correctly, and maintained appropriately.
