What a UV light can and cannot do in a furnace
Coil-facing UV-C for your furnace or air handler, not a hospital claim.
UV lights get sold as whole-home sterilization. What they actually do well is keep mold and biofilm down on a dark, wet coil. They do not replace filtration, and they do not fix air that never reaches the room. Rare Breed installs coil-facing UV lights after we check the duct, the airflow, and the filter fit, so the lamp is doing a real job. We book the visit on a 3-hour appointment window.
Start with the air you can already move
A light in the air handler does nothing for a crushed bedroom run. If your problem is dust, start with the filter and the duct. If the concern is growth on a wet coil or a musty smell when the system kicks on, UV is a reasonable add, and we will tell you which problem you have.

What coil-facing UV is for
A UV-C lamp aimed at the evaporator coil is meant to limit mold and biofilm on a surface that stays wet. That can keep the coil cleaner. It is not a room sterilizer and it is not a substitute for changing the filter.

What it will not do
It will not clean ducts. It will not remove dust. It will not fix inversion-season air if the return is leaking in a crawlspace. Those are duct and filtration jobs, and we handle those first.

Safety and replacement bulbs
UV-C is not a toy. Lamps need a place they cannot shine in your eyes, and they lose output long before they look dead. We mount the lamp inside the cabinet and cover the replacement schedule up front, usually every year or two.

How this sits next to filtration
A correctly sized media filter catches particles. UV is a different job on a wet surface. Stacking both without fixing airflow is how people spend twice and still have a dead bedroom.

How the install works
The lamp goes inside the air handler, aimed at the evaporator coil, wired so it is off when the cabinet is open. We check the drain pan and the filter fit while we are there, because a clean coil with a clogged drain is still a problem.

What to do if growth on the coil is the concern
Have the coil looked at, check the drain, and check filter fit. A lot of ‘I need UV’ calls are a clogged condensate pan or a filter that bypasses. That is ordinary service.
Check the coil and the drain first
A lot of musty-air calls are a clogged condensate pan or a filter that lets air bypass. We look at those first. If the coil still stays wet and dirty, a UV lamp aimed at it is the next step, mounted where it cannot shine in anyone’s eyes.

The spring coil wash that is still the first move when the air smells musty.
Do you install UV lights?
Yes. We install coil-facing UV lights in furnaces and air handlers. We check the duct, the filter, and the condensate drain first, so the lamp is not covering for a problem it cannot fix.
Will UV clean the air in my rooms?
Not in the way ads imply. It is aimed at a surface in the air handler. Rooms still need air that arrives and a filter that fits.
Is this the same as a portable purifier?
No. Portable units treat a room. Coil UV treats a coil. Neither replaces duct repair.
Should I start somewhere else?
Often, yes. If the complaint is dust or a room that never feels right, start with duct work and filtration sized to the system. UV is the right add when the coil itself is the problem.
